NY GAUCHOS BASKETBALL

Based in the heart of the Bronx, the NY Gauchos are one of the most storied grassroots basketball programs in the nation. Known for developing elite talent and building character on and off the court, the Gauchos have been a pillar in the community for decades. From youth leagues to top national competition, we’re committed to excellence, hustle, and heart.

Founded in the late 1960s in the Bronx, the NY Gauchos have grown into one of the most respected and recognizable grassroots basketball programs in the country. What started as a local initiative to give inner-city youth a positive outlet quickly evolved into a national powerhouse known for developing top-tier basketball talent.

The program’s name and identity are rooted in toughness, pride, and a sense of family. The iconic Gauchos Gym on Gerard Avenue—often referred to as “The Mecca” of New York youth basketball—has hosted countless future stars and remains a central hub for hoopers in the city.

Over the decades, the Gauchos have produced a long list of NCAA stars, NBA players, and overseas pros, while instilling discipline, leadership, and life skills in every player who comes through the program. Alumni include basketball legends such as Kenny Anderson, Rod Strickland, Stephon Marbury, Kemba Walker, and Jamal Mashburn, to name just a few.

More than just a basketball program, the Gauchos represent a culture—a legacy of excellence, community, and opportunity. For generations, they’ve been a beacon for young athletes in New York City and a respected name across the basketball world.

What makes the Gauchos special?

The Gauchos own and operate the building they occupy and are federally recognized under a non for profit 501c-3

For over 50 years the Gauchos have been embedded in the community and have provided recreational activities for thousands of youth in and around the New York City area.

The Gauchos has been rated by at least 1 on line publication as having the #1 ranked Grassroots basketball program in America.

The Gauchos gym is a NBA sized regulation court that can accomodate over 600 guest and has meeting space as well.

Located in the Bronx on what was called a commercial area off the east river in the early 80’s, the gym now sits in a residentail block on 149th street in one of the most sort after neighborhoods due to the restructure of zoning permits and now have neighbors such as Target, Bj’s, Home Depot, Applebees and the Hip Hop Museum.

Choosing the NY Gauchos means joining a legacy of excellence, character, and community. The Gauchos have been more than just a basketball program—they’ve been a family, a launchpad, and a second home for generations of athletes.

Whether your goal is to compete at the highest collegiate level, make it to the NBA, or grow as a student-athlete, the NY Gauchos offer the network, support, and pedigree to help you get there.

The History. The Network. The Opportunity.
